Maui
Activities - Includes outer islands
Maalaea is the most centrally located
area on Maui. It is quiet and affordable
with
restaurants, accommodations, a small
boat harbor, the Maui Ocean Center, a
miniature golf course, and many
shops. From this central location, Kihei
is a 5-10 minute drive, about 20
minutes to Lahaina, and 15 minutes to
Wailea. Maalaea offers spectacular views
of the Kihei Wailea coast and Mt.
Haleakala, as well as, Molokini,
Kahoolawe, and the Island of Lanai.
Many boating activities depart from
Maalaea Harbor daily. Sugar Beach
is just
south of Maalaea harbor and extends all
the way past Kihei and into Wailea.
Sugar beach consists of very fine hard
packed
sand, making this an excellent beach for
walking or jogging. Some say that this
beach is the most romantic place on the
island to take a morning or sunset walk
Beautiful Beaches
Ma'alaea Beach to Sugar Beach is five
miles of uninterrupted beach that is
excellent for swimmers, snorkelers, and
surfers. It's home of the Freight Train (the
fastest point break wave in the world).
Water Activities Abound
Maalaea Harbor offers a variety of water
activities. You can choose an exciting
snorkeling boat trip to Molokini, Olowalu,
and/or Turtle Town, scuba diving, an
unforgettable whale watching trip (in
season), charter fishing for Mahi Mahi,
Marlin,
or other game fish, or a romantic sunset
dinner cruise.

Kihei, by the way, is pronounced KEY-HEY. Kihei is
situated on the south shore of Maui. This is the
sunnier and dryer part of the island, boasting sunny
days most of the year. Kihei is home to some world
class beaches (i.e., Kamaole Beaches 1, 2, 3).
Kihei
also has some world class restaurants and is right
next door to upscale Wailea and Makena. Kihei
has something to offer everyone with windsurfing
beaches,
swimming and snorkeling beaches, excellent restaurants,
shopping, cinemas, public tennis courts (Kalama
Park) and the Kihei Boat Ramp (providing fast launches
for smaller craft, rafts, and canoes, only 15
minutes from Molokini Island and the Kanio Coast lava
caves).

Beautiful Beaches in Kihei

Kamaole I, II, & III Beach Parks
The three "Kam" beaches all offer just about
everything you could want in a day at the
beach. They all offer full facilities,
with lifeguards at One and Two, and each
beach has spectacular views of Molokini,
Kahoolawe, Lanai, and northwest
Maui. However, while they are all similar,
each one has its own unique charms.

At Kam I beach, the sand is soft and pure
with plenty of room for laying out your
beach towels and blankets. The beach
slopes gently into the ocean where the calm
waters and gradual grade are perfect for
wading and swimming. For those
itching to test out their new boards, Cove
Park on the extreme north end of the beach
is a popular sight for surf
instruction. A sand volleyball court also
adds to the fun here.

Kam II beach is nearly identical to its
sister to the north, lacking only the
volleyball court but making up for it with
more
of a border from the road. A small
sand knoll covered in plants cuts down on
the presence of the road.

Kam III beach offers the most seclusion,
with a small beach area being found on the
other side of a large grass field. The
beach has a littlemore of a shore break than
Kam I or Kam II and is perfect for little
kids who are eager to play in the
surf. The real draw to Kam
III,however, is the field which offers a
playground, shade, and plenty of room for
other
activities.
Keawakapu Beach

If you visit in the summertime, Keawakapu is
the picture of tranquility- a peaceful white
sand beach with a gently sloping
shoreline and calm waters. In winter months,
however, the unprotected shoreline is
pounded by high surf. Keawakapu
is best known for the beautiful reef which
produces a natural gathering spot for a
variety of tropical fish, and
therefore snorkelers. Facilities here
include a shower and paved parking, with
other amenities found "next door"
at Ulua and Mokapu beaches. Keawakapu is the
most peaceful and beautiful of the beaches
in Kihei.
